ADHD medication guide: stimulants, non-stimulants and off-label options

Stimulants, non-stimulants and the stay-awake pills people take off-label. What each one does, what real users say about it, and where it's sold.

Start here

Two kinds of ADHD meds. One honest map.

ADHD medicines come in two camps, plus a third shelf most people hear about later.

Stimulants like Adderall, Vyvanse and Ritalin can start working on the first day. Non-stimulants like Strattera, Qelbree and guanfacine usually take longer to judge. Some users describe a steadier day; others notice side effects or little benefit. And on the third shelf sit modafinil and armodafinil, wakefulness pills many people try off-label.

For each one we show what it does, what the trials found, how real users describe it and where it stands legally. Which one you take is for you and your prescriber to decide.

What surprises most people

  • Amphetamines had the largest average adult symptom effect among the medicines in a large 2018 comparison. That short-term finding does not pick a winner for everyone.
  • Strattera takes patience. Some people notice little at first. Approval studies followed people over weeks, and patience comes up repeatedly in the selected Reddit stories.
  • Modafinil wakes you up more than it focuses you. Plenty of users say it lifts the fog and makes it easier to start the day’s tasks. It doesn’t sharpen attention the way a stimulant does, and the biggest adult trial found no benefit over placebo.
  • Modalert lists the same ingredient as Provigil: modafinil. It is a Sun Pharma-listed Indian brand; a shared ingredient does not establish local approval or make every pack interchangeable.

Real user experiences: what patients report

We collected 191 Reddit discussion records dating from 2011 to 2026, including archived pages and search snippets, and selected examples of the different experiences. A taste:

  • On Ritalin: “Ritalin has been a life changer for me. Got a job, get stuff done and I‘m actually an organized version of myself now!” (r/Nootropics)
  • On guanfacine: “Intuniv/Guanfacine (an ADHD medication) reduced my anxiety by about 70%!” (r/antidepressants)
  • On Strattera: “Strattera generally takes about a month to really do much” (r/ADHD)
  • On modafinil: “It didn’t help my day dreaming or my focus at all.” (r/ADHD)
  • On Qelbree: “Overall, 2.5 weeks in this medication is changing my life.” (r/qelbree)

Each medicine page has more of these, with how we selected the stories. They are examples, not a survey of how well a medicine works.

Non-stimulant ADHD medication: the full lineup

Strattera has substantial adult ADHD research. Qelbree is a newer US option. Guanfacine and clonidine have a different rhythm, with sleepiness an important part of the picture. Wellbutrin is sometimes used off-label; mood and attention do not always change together. Modafinil and armodafinil are licensed for sleepiness disorders and also discussed for off-label ADHD use.

Compare all seven side by side, with how fast each one works and the side effects to watch for.

Modafinil for ADHD: does it actually work?

Ask on any ADHD forum and you get two camps. One says modafinil is what finally gets them out of bed and through the to-do list. The other is wide awake, heart going, still staring at the wall.

The studies help explain why the personal accounts are not a simple yes or no. In kids it worked on ADHD symptoms, then three serious rashes in 933 children ended its chances of a license. In adults, a few small studies looked good and the one big trial, 330 people, found nothing over placebo.

Read the evidence, the doses and the user stories, or compare the timing of armodafinil.

Modalert, Waklert, Artvigil: the Indian generics

Online listings often use Indian brand names associated with companies such as Sun Pharma, HAB Pharmaceuticals and Emcure. Strattera has an Indian ingredient counterpart too: Axepta, listed by Intas.

Matching the active ingredient helps decode the box. It does not settle product approval, the right formulation or whether a seller can supply you. Compare the names, listed companies and strengths.

Strattera side effects: what to expect

For some people, the first weeks are the bumpy part. Nausea, dry mouth, a smaller appetite and patchy sleep are the most common complaints, and taking it after a meal eases the nausea for a lot of people. In adult trials, 8 in 100 men had erection problems and 4 in 100 had delayed ejaculation.

It depends on where you live:

  • United States: a Schedule IV controlled substance, on prescription only.
  • United Kingdom: a prescription-only medicine, licensed for sleepiness caused by narcolepsy.
  • Canada: a prescription drug, not a controlled substance.
  • Australia: Schedule 4, prescription only. A personal import needs an Australian prescription and is capped at a 3-month supply.

Your call. Our homework.

We read medicine information and studies, collected Reddit discussion records, and we write down what each medicine does, what people say about it and where it’s sold. What you do with that is up to you. If we were choosing, we’d still run it past a doctor who knows us.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best ADHD medication?

No single one works for everyone. In a large 2018 comparison of ADHD medicines, amphetamines (Adderall, Vyvanse) had the largest effect in adults, and methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) was the preferred first choice for children and teens. If stimulants make you anxious, keep you up at night or raise your blood pressure, atomoxetine (Strattera) has the most evidence of the non-stimulants.

What is the best non-stimulant ADHD medication?

There is no single best one for everyone. Atomoxetine (Strattera) has substantial adult research; Qelbree is a newer US option. Some people describe less emotional overload with guanfacine, while others find it too sedating. Those stories help frame the questions, not choose a treatment for you. See all the non-stimulants side by side.

Is modafinil approved for ADHD?

No. It’s licensed for sleepiness from narcolepsy, and in the US also for sleep apnea and shift work disorder. Using it for ADHD is off-label. Many people take it to shake off the fog and get started on tasks, but it is not approved for ADHD in the US or UK. Read more on modafinil for ADHD.

Is Modalert the same as Provigil?

Same listed ingredient, different product. Provigil contains modafinil, and Modalert is a Sun Pharma-listed modafinil brand in India. Waklert and Nuvigil both list armodafinil. That does not establish local approval or a direct product swap. See the Indian brands.

Which is stronger: modafinil or armodafinil?

Armodafinil can give higher drug levels at the same milligram dose, particularly later in the day. That is not a clinical strength ratio or a guarantee of better focus. Its usual label doses differ from modafinil’s; a prescriber needs to set the actual dose. See armodafinil.

Where can I buy Strattera or modafinil online?

Our where to buy page groups seller listings by advertised market, and the Indian brands guide shows the listed companies and ingredients. Rules differ from country to country, so check what yours allows before you order. How to use this guide explains how.
