Armodafinil: the long-lasting modafinil
Armodafinil (Nuvigil, Waklert, Artvigil) keeps working later in the day than modafinil, from a smaller dose. What it is for, how much people take, side effects, Indian brands and what users say.
Armodafinil is modafinil’s longer-lasting sibling. Modafinil is a 50/50 mix of two mirror-image forms of the same molecule, and one of them lasts about three times longer in the body. Armodafinil is that long-lasting form on its own. The result: a smaller dose that keeps working later into the day.
The original brand is Nuvigil. In India it is sold as Waklert (Sun Pharma), Artvigil (HAB Pharmaceuticals) and Armod (Emcure), and these Indian brands are what many people buy online.

- What it is for: staying awake with narcolepsy, sleep apnea or shift work disorder. That is its US license, for adults.
- Usual dose: 150 mg in the morning, or 150 mg about an hour before a night shift. 250 mg is the top dose for narcolepsy and sleep apnea.

Where it is licensed
- United States: for adults with excessive sleepiness caused by narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea or shift work disorder. It is a Schedule IV controlled substance, the same group as modafinil. It has not been studied in children and is not approved for them.
- United Kingdom: there is no UK product information for armodafinil, so it is not a licensed medicine there.

Any other use, ADHD included, is off-label. Here’s what that means.
How it compares with modafinil
The two act the same way in the brain. The difference is timing and strength.

Why does armodafinil feel stronger if the half-life looks the same? The short-lived half of modafinil clears in about 4 hours and leaves only the long-lived half behind. At the same 200 mg dose, armodafinil reached about 37% higher peak levels and 70% more total exposure than modafinil in steady use. That is why the standard armodafinil tablet is smaller.
One practical tip from the label: taking it with food can push the peak back by 2 to 4 hours, so it kicks in later and lasts later.
How much people take
Your prescriber sets the dose. These are the US label numbers:

In sleep apnea, 250 mg was well tolerated but gave no consistent extra benefit over 150 mg. Tablets come in 50, 150, 200 and 250 mg.
Side effects
In trials with 645 people on armodafinil, these were the most common:

Headaches were more common at 250 mg (23%) than at 150 mg (14%), so a lower dose is often the gentler one. About 7% of people stopped because of side effects, against 4% on placebo.
Good to know
- The pill may not protect you. Armodafinil can make hormonal contraception fail during treatment and for a month after you stop. Use condoms or another non-hormonal method alongside it.
- Not in pregnancy without a doctor. Growth problems and miscarriage have been reported with modafinil and armodafinil, though it is not known whether the drug caused them.
- Check your other medicines. Armodafinil lowers levels of some drugs, such as midazolam and quetiapine, and raises others, such as omeprazole.
- Sleep still matters. It keeps you awake but does not replace sleep, and people with a sleep disorder should not assume they are fine to drive.
Have a doctor you can call
Serious skin reactions are rare, but they can start with what looks like an ordinary rash in the first weeks. Knowing the warning signs, and having a doctor you can reach quickly, is the best protection.
Armodafinil for ADHD
It is not licensed for ADHD anywhere. A 2024 review of 86 papers found that armodafinil improves wakefulness, memory, impulse control and planning in people with sleep disorders and other conditions, and concluded it “could be useful” for adult ADHD. The same review says the direct evidence in ADHD is scarce. In short: plausible, untested at scale. Is armodafinil stronger than modafinil?
Per milligram, yes. Armodafinil is the long-lasting half of modafinil: at the same 200 mg dose it gave about 70% more total exposure. That is why its standard dose is 150 mg, against 200 mg for modafinil.
Is Waklert the same as Nuvigil?
Same medicine, different maker. Waklert is Sun Pharma’s armodafinil brand in India; Nuvigil is the original US brand. Artvigil (HAB Pharmaceuticals) and Armod (Emcure) are other Indian brands.
How long does armodafinil last?
Its half-life is about 15 hours, so most people take it first thing in the morning, or an hour before a night shift, to keep it from spoiling their sleep.
Can I take armodafinil for ADHD?
It is not licensed for ADHD, and there are few direct studies. Some prescribers try it off-label for adults when other options do not suit. Talk it through with yours.
