Wellbutrin for ADHD: worth a try?
Bupropion (Wellbutrin) is an antidepressant that some doctors use for ADHD, especially alongside low mood. What the studies show, doses, side effects, the seizure rule and what users say.

Bupropion, best known as Wellbutrin, is an antidepressant with a twist: unlike most antidepressants it works on norepinephrine and dopamine, the same brain chemicals that ADHD medicines target, and not on serotonin. That’s why doctors sometimes reach for it in ADHD, especially when low mood, smoking or a wariness of stimulants is part of the picture.
Key points
- Licensed for depression (and, as Zyban, for quitting smoking), not for ADHD. ADHD is an off-label use.
- It does help some adults. Trials found a moderate benefit, smaller than with stimulants, and a Cochrane review rated the evidence as low quality.
- It isn’t a stimulant and isn’t a controlled substance in the US.
- The one big rule: keep to the dose. Seizure risk rises at higher doses, and some people shouldn’t take it at all.
Why doctors try it for ADHD
The label describes bupropion as a relatively weak blocker of norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake. Stimulants and atomoxetine work on the same two chemicals, so there is a logic to it. It often comes up when someone has ADHD and depression together, wants a non-stimulant, or is also trying to stop smoking.
Does it work for ADHD?
Yes, modestly, for some adults:
- The biggest trial: 162 adults took up to 450 mg a day of the once-daily XL form for 8 weeks. 53% responded (a drop of at least 30% in symptoms), against 31% on placebo, and the difference showed as early as week 2. Only 5% stopped because of the medicine.
- The Cochrane review (2017): six trials, 438 adults. Bupropion reduced ADHD symptoms and made a clear improvement more likely, and people tolerated it about as well as placebo. The reviewers rated the evidence as low quality and said more research is likely to change the picture.
- Compared with other medicines: a large 2018 analysis in The Lancet Psychiatry found bupropion better than placebo in adults, with an effect similar to methylphenidate and atomoxetine, while amphetamines had the largest effect.
Put simply: a reasonable option, especially with depression in the mix, but rarely the strongest one for ADHD on its own.
How much people take
Your prescriber sets the dose. This is the Wellbutrin SR schedule for depression:
| Step | Dose |
|---|---|
| Start | 150 mg once in the morning |
| After 3 days | 150 mg twice a day (300 mg), at least 8 hours apart |
| Maximum | 400 mg a day (200 mg twice a day), only after several weeks without enough benefit |
- Never take more than 200 mg at once of the SR form. Seizure risk is tied to the dose: about 1 in 1,000 people up to 300 mg a day, about 4 in 1,000 at 400 mg.
- Missed a dose? Skip it and take the next one at the usual time. Don’t double up.
- Swallow whole. Don’t crush, split or chew the tablets.
- In ADHD trials, doses ran from 150 to 450 mg a day of long-acting forms, depending on the product.
- It takes weeks to judge, though in the large trial some people responded by week 2.
Side effects
At 300 mg a day, the side effects clearly more common than on placebo were less appetite, dry mouth, rash, sweating, ringing in the ears and tremor. At 400 mg, agitation, anxiety, trouble sleeping, dizziness, nausea and a racing heart were added. About 9 in 100 people at 300 mg stopped because of side effects, against 4 in 100 on placebo.
Good to know
- Blood pressure can rise, especially combined with nicotine patches. Have it checked.
- Alcohol: keep it low or avoid it. Bupropion can lower alcohol tolerance, and heavy drinking followed by stopping suddenly raises seizure risk.
- Mood: like all antidepressants, it carries a warning about suicidal thoughts in young people, and it can trigger mania in people with bipolar disorder.
- Only one bupropion product at a time. Wellbutrin, Zyban and generic bupropion are the same medicine.
Medicines that don’t mix
- MAOI antidepressants: never together, and 14 days apart.
- Medicines that lower the seizure threshold, such as antipsychotics, other antidepressants, theophylline and steroid tablets: only with care and low doses.
- Drugs cleared by CYP2D6: bupropion blocks this enzyme, raising levels of many antidepressants, some antipsychotics, metoprolol, and heart rhythm drugs such as flecainide. It may weaken tamoxifen.
- Atomoxetine: CYP2D6 is also the enzyme that clears atomoxetine, so prescribers raise the atomoxetine dose more slowly when the two are combined.
- Clopidogrel and ticlopidine raise bupropion levels; ritonavir, efavirenz and carbamazepine lower them.
What people say
From 18 Reddit threads about bupropion or Wellbutrin and ADHD, plus Google’s snippets of related threads. These are personal stories, not evidence.
- Helpful, but milder (5 threads). “It definitely helped, but I would say it reduced my symptoms by about 30%, whereas the right ADHD med reduced them by about 85-90%.” (r/adhdwomen)
- Mood lifts first (10 threads). “when I was just on Buproprion, it greatly improved my mood. Less negative thoughts.” (r/bupropion)
- Calmer conversations. “Wellbutrin helped with conversational focus, and reduced my antsy-ness, and helped me calm.” (r/bupropion)
- Smoothing the stimulant crash. “I do find that Wellbutrin helps with mood swings and helps temper the irritability that comes when my ADHD meds wear off.” (r/ADHD)
- A first clue. For one person it worked well enough to change the diagnosis: “my Wellbutrin made my adhd better to the point it tipped off my doctor that I should try adhd meds” (r/adhdwomen).
Where to buy
Generic bupropion is sold online, for example bupropion from ExpatMeds with international delivery, Wellbutrin from BrightPharm in the UK and Wellbutrin from Onyx Pills in Canada. More on where to buy and how to use this guide.
Questions people ask
Is Wellbutrin approved for ADHD?
No. In the US it is licensed for depression, and as Zyban for quitting smoking. Using it for ADHD is off-label, which is legal when your prescriber judges it right for you.
Does Wellbutrin work as well as Adderall?
Usually not. Trials found a moderate effect on ADHD symptoms, and a large comparison found amphetamines had the biggest effect. Some people prefer bupropion because it lifts mood and isn’t a stimulant.
Can I take Wellbutrin with my ADHD medicine?
Some people take it with a stimulant, but combining medicines is your prescriber’s call. With atomoxetine, bupropion raises atomoxetine levels, so doses are adjusted slowly.
Is bupropion a stimulant?
No. It is an antidepressant that works on norepinephrine and dopamine, and it isn’t a controlled substance in the US.
